Dr. J.S Sharma is the former Group General Manager-Head Environment (2018) at Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), New Delhi, India, with more than 43 years of experience in the fraternity and expertise in Environmental Pollution Prevention & Control. ONGC is India’s top Maharatna company and a leader in oil and gas exploration, production and now, energy transition towards a greener future.
In this role, Dr. Sharma led the organization wide corporate, strategic and operational planning for environmental conservation across upstream, downstream and midstream sector petroleum, climate change and risk management. He played a pivotal role in firming up strategies for emission reduction, decarbonization and transitioning of installations towards low carbon operations. Dr. Sharma is National Level Expert and Leader in Environmental Pollution Prevention and Control, Climate Change Mitigation and Net Zero. He expertly integrates R&D and technology to develop sustainable energy inclusive of low carbon /decarbonized solutions for climate mitigation, responsible-affordable energy, for the energy security of the country.
Dr. Sharma is also the former Additional Director (Environment) at Oil Industry Safety Directorate, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) and steered the development of national standards and guidelines on several environmental issues of upstream, downstream and mid-stream industry of the petroleum sector and has expertly audited almost all the refineries and oil gas facilities in India. Dr. Sharma is also the former Non-Executive Director of OSRL , Southampton ,United Kingdom.
Dr. J.S Sharma is a recipient of numerous awards and recognitions for his outstanding contributions in the field of Environment. He has been awarded for Outstanding Contribution in the field of Air Quality and Air Pollution including Control by PHD Chamber of Commerce, New Delhi, identified as Resource Person on International Geo-sphere Biosphere Program (IGBP) for Developing Green House, Emission Inventories from Petroleum Sector by Late Dr. A. P. MITRA, Bhatnagar Fellow, Ex. DG CSIR, CHAIRMAN-IGBP, ONGC CMD Individual Award For Innovation (2011), ONGC CMD Letter of Appreciation for contribution to Environment Issues (2012), Appreciation Letters by the Executive Director Chief HSE (2013).

Presently, Dr. Sharma is President of Indian Association of Air Pollution Control (IAAPC),New Delhi and an Expert Member on numerous national level committees like Co-Chairman of Environment and Climate Change Committee PhD Chamber of Commerce (New Delhi), Member - Domain Expert Group on Ecology, Environment and Sustainability (CSIR-HQ), Member, National Mission Mode Project on CCUS & Monitoring (CSIR-HQ), Member, National Expert Panel For Methane Monitoring, Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, Member- Technical Committee for Review and Formulation of Air Quality Standards at Bureau Of Indian Standards, Member- Environment Ecology Council at Bureau Of Indian Standards. Additionally, he is a Board Member of Ind-Air, CSIR NEERI and Member of Board of Studies at Gurugram University.
Dr. Sharma is the Former Chairman , NGT Committee on Pitless Drilling, Former Member of Expert Appraisal Committee- Industry II at Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change, Government of India (GOI) and Former Member, QCI-NABET Accreditation Committee.
An acclaimed leader in in the international fora of energy sector, environment and climate change, Dr. Sharma has been a member of numerous Indian Delegations abroad- Canada, United Kingdom, Indonesia, Malaysia, regular invitee at the Innovation for Cool Earth Forum (ICEF) at Tokyo, Japan since 2014 till date by Late PM Shinzo Abe, member of delegation for Green Hydrogen in Bergen, Norway, Evaluator for New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization’s Research Proposals, Japan and Former Non- Executive Director at OSRL, Southampton.
A luminary academician, Dr. Sharma is a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Agra University, India and completed his Post-Doctoral Studies from Japan on Global Environmental Issues (1992- 93) ( CFC destruction technologies for protection Ozone layer) as an STA Fellow, Japan Research Development Corporation(JRDC), METI, Govt. of Japan. Dr. Sharma is a research scholar in Inorganic Chemistry from the Imperial College, London. Exposed to leadership program at International Management Institute, New Delhi and IFP France of French Institute of Petroleum, Paris & OSRL-San-Francisco, USA by Harvard Business School during (2015). He also completed Oil Spill Contingency Planning Course at OSRL. Southampton (1997). Worked at Imperial College, London in connection with research work.
As a curious young Scientist, Dr. Sharma worked on Atmospheric Contamination of Archaeological Monuments of Agra Region including impact of Mathura Refinery on Taj Mahal, conducted Air Pollution studies of oil fields throughout India and presented his research paper in Paris on national level nomination. Dr. Sharma has published more than 52 Nos. of publications and Co – authored book on ‘Environmental Management In Petroleum Industry’ published by M/s. Willey Eastern. He has one patent in the field of environmental protection and has presented numerous research papers in International fora including invited talks in abroad i.e. US, UK, Europe and in Asia.
